BvR

by Ethan Ham and Scott Cavanah (United States of America)

Genre: 2-player local stickshooter

BvR is a local, two-player competitive game. One player wears blue-tinted glasses and the other wears red-tinted glasses. The differing colors of the glasses allows for an experimental mechanic where certain objects can be visible to one player but not the other, even though both players are looking at the same game space on the same monitor.

The game’s core mechanics take advantage of the fact that cyan objects are invisible to the player with the blue glasses and yellow objects are invisible to the player with the red glasses. The game begins with both players seeing the same environment, but player actions can change that.

The gameplay takes inspiration from the 1970s Atari Combat tank game. The use of color filters is an idea conceived by Ian Schreiber and used with his permission.
